Tara Rodgers Retrospective and Q&A w/ DJ Rekha

Retrospective Tara Rodgers

Tickets here

Friday, March 14, 2025 at 6PM

EMPAC Studio 2
CURTIS R. PRIEM EXPERIMENTAL MEDIA AND PERFORMING ARTS CENTER
at Rensselaer

On the corner of 8th Street and College Avenue / Troy, NY 12180

Multi-instrumentalist composer and electronic music historian Tara Rodgers produces a retrospective concert of selected works from the past 20 years, diffused in an immersive 4.1 sound system.

Rodgers’ research and music explore electronic sound as material and metaphor, with studio practice as a hands-on parallel to study of the long history of electronic music and sound. Her music is described as combining “rigor and reverence... bold in the precision and subtlety it takes to mix such signals with thrill and grace and restraint” (NPR Music), “carrying her listeners along through deeply felt, deeply connected sonic energy that embodies joy, transcendence, and positivity” (Routledge).

The concert juxtaposes her wide-ranging work across styles and methods, from generative computer music written in SuperCollider, to electroacoustic compositions featuring piano improvisation, to pulsing ambient and techno tracks.

As a historian and multidisciplinary scholar, Rodgers has also published essays in foundational volumes in contemporary studies of music, sound, technology, and culture. Her book Pink Noises: Women on Electronic Music and Sound (Duke University Press, 2010) brings together twenty-four interviews with women in electronic music and sound cultures who expand notions of who and what counts in matters of invention, production, and noise-making.

After the concert, Rodgers is joined by Rensselaer Arts graduate student and renowned DJ Rekha Malhotra for an onstage conversation and Q&A.

NYC Mid Autumn Fest 2024

The Mid-Autumn Fest is the culmination of an 8-week fundraiser for Meals for Unity. If you cannot attend, please consider donating directly here.

Also known as the Harvest Moon Festival, the Mid-Autumn Fest is an extraordinary opportunity to unite the Asian-American community in celebration of the fruits of our labor throug a day-long celebration—featuring a mix of performers and creators: musicians, dancers, DJs, artisans, culinary masters, creators, martial arts practitioners, visual artists, and comedians. In essence, we were bringing the magic of the Asian Night Market to the heart of Queens.. As we gather under the luminous harvest moon, we will embark on a mission to cultivate community resiliency and sustainable vitality for Asian American-owned entrepreneurs in the entertainment and food service industries.

ABOUT MEALS FOR UNITY

As a group of young professionals who are predominantly first-generation Americans, we understand the unique challenges and needs of the elderly AAPI community. Our experiences, along with those passed on to us from generations prior, have shaped our perspectives and gave us the knowledge and tools to be able to empathize, support, and uplift this neglected sector of the community.

By leveraging their resources, networks, and professional experiences, they source culturally relevant meals from locally owned AAPI restaurants, catering to the specific dietary needs and preferences of the elderly AAPI community while stimulating the Chinatown economy. Their goal is to provide not just sustenance, but also a sense of comfort and nostalgia; paying homage to the heritage of those they serve.

By the end of 2023, we have served over 14,700 free meals, have executed 38 meal distribution events, have been aided by over 570 volunteers, recorded more than 3,000 volunteer hours, and have partnered with over 45 corporate sponsors, non-profits, and local restaurants.

ABOUT MOONLITE

Moonlite exists to uncover, illuminate, and elevate the diverse perspectives and expressions that currently exist in our creative community of Asian Americans. We create wholly unique experiences to build our collective sustainability. In plain speak, we love showcasing the diverse talents of the Asian-American creative community by creating spaces for them to share their art and, importantly, to help them get paid for it so that they can keep making more.

While our goal is to build up our creative community and foster sustainable careers, we believe wholeheartedly that this is best achieved when everyone is having A GOOD TIME.

Bollywood Disco at Museum of the Moving Image with director Saleem Nasir Gondal: Talk + Party

Still from Post Term (2023), dir. Saleem Nasir Gondal

Bollywood Disco: Talk + Party

Location: William Fox Amphitheater

Part of Open Worlds

5:00–8:00pm

Join Queens-based DJ Rekha and filmmaker Saleem Nasir Gondal for a discussion about how Hindi films (aka Bollywood, the film industry in Mumbai) engage with cultural, national, and political borders. We discuss the evolution of storytelling in Hindi cinema influenced by political tides, highlighting films that traveled across national borders and the greater South Asian diaspora. We will screen clips from Bollywood films across the ages, discussing the ways they were received in and outside of India, and present Gondal’s short Post Term (2023), a film about a Pakistani couple settling in Long Island in the 1990s that was inspired by the cultural heritage of Bollywood. At a time of intense division in the U.S. and abroad, we invite audiences to see how Hindi cinema offers a nexus point between different communities and identities across the diaspora.

After the discussion, at 6:00 p.m. join us for Bollywood Disco by the legendary DJ Rekha. Classic numbers, live performances, film favorites, and disco grooves are remixed into bangers that will keep you dancing the night away. Don’t miss your “dance pe chance.”
